Luminaires contain lamps which are significant heat sources. Many
components in luminaires are sensitive to temperature - for example
plastic glazing, chokes, electronic components and cable insulation.
To ensure that safe operating temperatures are not exceeded, extensive
testing at all vulnerable points is required within a specially
constructed, draught free enclosure specified in BS 4533. The enclosure
measures 2.5 x 1.5 x 2.2m high internally and will take 2 large
luminaires at one time. Thermocouples are used for highly accurate
temperature sensing.
The test equipment is designed to accept a Calorimeter which allows
the measurement of heat recovery, light output and pressure drop
for air-handling luminaires.
